.       SCROLL COMPRESSOR .

.    From the inception of air conditioning and refrigeration until just the past few years,
most systems used RECIPROCATING COMPRESSORS (RC).  RCs operate much like the
engine in your car.  They have pistons, crankshafts, and valves that open and close.  
While the RC served us well for about 100 years, the SCROLL COMPRESSOR (SC) that
was actually patented over 100 years ago has only been mas produced for a few
decades.

.    The biggest advantage a SC has over a RC is volumetric efficiency.  Very simply it is
able to pump the same amount of refrigerant for less energy input.  Another advantage is
that they have less moving parts.  

.    The concept is very different.  Instead of having pistons moving up and down with
valves opening and closing 1700 times per second, it simply has 2 plates with matching
corkscrews. One plate is stationary and the other orbits.  This wikipedia article shows a
picture that might make it easier to grasp the orbiting concept.  

.    Another compressor variation that applies to both the RC and the SC is the use of 2
Stage or Variable Speed.
