.                                          .MERV
MERV is a nickname often given to people named Mervin.  Sorry, I couldn't resist.

.   The MERV you came here to learn about is an acronym for
Minimum Efficiency
Reporting Value.
It is a system designed to help end users fairly evaluate ability of
air filters to stop undesirable pollutants from passing through the air stream they are
installed in.  This rating was developed by ASHRAE, the engineering association for the
heating and cooling industry. Beware of filters that do not provide a MERV rating.  If they
don't list it, they're probably not proud of it.

.   This number is not the only thing, or even the most important thing to be considered in
choosing an air filtration system.  While it is accurate in determining the filters ability to
stop particles, it does not consider the filters PRESSURE DROP.
Many people have
learned a hard lesson
, when they purchased a high efficiency filter from an unqualified
provider.   This can, and often does cause excess restriction of air, leading to
IMMEDIATE
OR EARLY FAILURE
of compressors, heat exchangers, fans, and other expensive
components.

.   MERV ratings range from 1-16, with 1 being the poorest, and 16 being the best
.

.   While a filter with a MERV 1 rating may be 100% efficient at stopping large particles
like ping pong balls, it would do little good at stopping pollen, mold spores, smoke, or
many of the other things you don't want to breathe.

MERV 7 filters remove more than 50% of airborne particles between 3.0 and 10.0
microns. This includes pollen, dust mite debris, mold spores, dust and dander.

MERV 11 filters remove more than 85% of airborne particles between 3.0 and 10.0
microns and more than 65% of airborne particles between 1.0 and 3.0 microns. This
includes tobacco smoke particles, pollen, dust mite debris, mold spores, dust and
dander.

MERV 16 filters remove more than 95% of particles over 3 microns and more than 90%
of particles over 0.01 microns in size.

HEPA filters can remove at least 99.97% of airborne particles 0.3 microns but are
seldom used in HVAC, as they are very expensive and restrictive.

.   Some of the most common filters found in residential use only have a MERV rating of 1
to 4. These are typically disposable panel type filters and do not do a good job of filtering
the air because they will not stop particles smaller than 10 microns.
