.                   Myth or Truth ?  .

M.  Myth or Truth .
R.  Response .

M.  You can save money by putting your sprinkler by your air conditioner on a hot day.
R.  While it is true that  will lower your head pressure on that day, and actually save you
money that day, after several days the calcium that builds up on the coil will slow down
heat transfer and raise your electric consumption.

M.  I should run hot water to my ice maker, because hot water freezes faster than cold.
R.  We do recommend running hot water to very small residential ice makers, if they do
not have a good filter.  This is because the hot water has left behind many of the
calcium and minerals in your water heater, and will make cleaner ice.  Hot water,
however, does not freeze faster than cold, as it takes time to get it cold before it can
begin freezing.  Once it is cold, it will freeze at the same speed as the water that
started out cold.

M.  A High Efficiency Air conditioner will only use half as much electricity as my old
system
.
R.  That depends on what you have now.  Some new systems with a
SEER of 18 will use
only 1/3 of the electricity an old 6 EER air conditioner uses.

M.  You can save a lot of money with one of those "New High Tech" electric heaters.
R.  There are many manufacturers of  free standing electric heaters that claim to employ
"NEW SPACE AGE TECHNOLOGY" or other catchy technologies to heat air using
electricity.  Most of them sell for around $200 and are often accompanied with marketing
schemes like "one day only sale", or "buy one get one free", or Amish men made the
wood case".  Many claim their systems are much more efficient than the simple $30.00
variety you can buy at Walmart.  The fact is that all non
HEAT PUMP electric heating
devices will give you exactly 3413
BTUs of heat per KWH of electricity you buy.  In other
words, these heaters are exactly the same efficiency as the cheap ones.  Most homes
can get their heat much cheaper than that even from their old furnace.

M.  Turning your thermostat lower at night in the winter does not save you any money.
R.  For most gas heating systems and Geothermal systems this is false.  For some Air to
Air Heat Pumps with certain thermostats, this may be true.  If you question whether or
not you should, just give us a call.  We will answer the question for your specific
situation.

M.  You can not use a Geothermal system in town on a small lot.
R.  False, click here to read about
Vertical Geothermal Systems.

M.  A gas heating system dries out the air but a boiler system does not.
R.  This is a mater of perspective.  Most boiler systems used for space heating do not
add water to the space they are heating.  Any system that heats the air but does not
add water to it, lowers the
Relative Humidity.  Read more.

M.  You should not run a "Swamp cooler" and a Refrigerated Air Conditioner
at the same time
.
R.  This is true.  The Swamp cooler (evaporative cooler) adds water to the air as it cools.
The Refrigerated Air Conditioner (regular AC) has to work hard and wastes a lot of
energy pulling that same moisture back out.

M.  Any gas furnace that uses electricity is a Dual Fuel Heating System.
R.  Technically this is true, as the electricity it uses would be indirectly be turned into heat
energy, thus heating the space with gas and electricity.  We most often use the term to
describe a system that couples an Air to Air Heat pump with a High Efficiency Furnace
to provide you the best option at any given time.
Read more about Dual Fuel.

M.  It doesn't save money to open the windows at night in the summer.
R.  On some days this is true and on some days this is false.  In general, if the Relative
Humidity is high it does not save money to open the windows at night, because the
AC has to work very hard the next day to remove that humidity.  If the
Relative Humidity
is low, and the outdoor temp is cool, it does save you money, as your AC will not have
to run during the night.
