.   Many older furnaces that were installed even as late as 1999 only operated at an AFUE
of about 60%.   What that means is that for every dollar's worth of gas you buy, you get
about 65 cents worth of heat, and about 40 cents is wasted.   

.   One VERY SIMPLE TEST is to turn your furnace on, wait about 15 minutes, and very
carefully hold your hand near the flue pipe.  Do not touch it, as some are over 500
degrees and would burn you before you could react.  Your flue pipe is the pipe that
takes carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, and a few other things you don't want in your
home, outside.  The results analysis is very simple.  If this pipe is to hot to touch, then you
are wasting valuable heat.

steward of this environment.  So, how does a HIGH EFFICIENCY FURNACE  do
that?   Very simply, it does the same job as a standard furnace, but it uses LESS GAS,
AND LESS ELECTRICITY.   Most of the electricity we use around here is generated by
burning fossil fuels.   Therefore, we burn less fossil fuels because of our lower gas, and
our lower electricity usage.
